Esp8266 เป็น Module Wifi ขนาดเล็กราคาถูก ใช้พลังงานน้อย รองรับการใช้งานได้หลายรูปแบบไม่ว่าจะเป็น Client Server Access Point Client+Ap สามารถใช้เชื่อมต่อ Arduino to esp8266 ผ่าน AT command หรือเขียนกับโปรแกรม Arduino IDE ได้เลยแล้วแต่สะดวก

ESP-01 เป็นโมดูล WiFi ขนาดเล็กที่ใช้ชิพ ESP8266EX ซึ่งมีความสามารถในการเชื่อมต่อเครือข่ายไร้สายเป็นแบบ Station หรือ Access Point ใช้งานได้ทั้งโหมด Client และ Server ทำให้ ESP-01 เหมาะสำหรับการพัฒนาโปรเจ็กต์อินเทอร์เน็ตขนาดเล็ก ๆ อาทิเช่น ระบบควบคุมอุปกรณ์ด้วยโทรศัพท์มือถือผ่าน WiFi หรือการส่งข้อมูลไปยังแพลตฟอร์ม IoT ต่าง ๆ

ESP-01 มีขาต่อเชื่อมต่อพื้นฐาน 2 ขา คือ TX (ส่งข้อมูล) และ RX (รับข้อมูล) รวมถึงขา VCC (เส้นไฟบวก) และ GND (เส้นไฟลบ) สามารถใช้งานได้ทันทีโดยต่อกับไมโครคอนโทรเลอร์ Arduino หรือ NodeMCU ผ่านขา TX และ RX หรือจะใช้เป็นโมดูล WiFi สำหรับต่อกับวงจรอิเล็กทรอนิกส์อื่น ๆ ก็ได้ ในการใช้งานจำเป็นต้องเขียนโปรแกรมควบคุม ESP-01 ด้วยภาษา C/C++ และใช้โปรแกรม Arduino IDE ในการแก้ไขและอัปโหลดโปรแกรมไปยัง ESP-01 ผ่านช่องทาง Serial Port หรือ USB-to-Serial Converter.

ESP8266 is a highly integrated chip designed for the needs of a new connected world. It offers a complete and self-contained Wi-Fi networking solution, allowing it to either host the application or to offload all Wi-Fi networking functions from another application processor.

ESP8266 has powerful on-board processing and storage capabilities that allow it to be integrated with the sensors and other application specific devices through its GPIOs with minimal development up-front and minimal loading during runtime. Its high degree of on-chip integration allows for minimal external circuitry, and the entire solution, including front-end module, is designed to occupy minimal PCB area.
